Jojoba oil: the oil that works like your skin's own.

It hydrates like a rich oil but never feels like one. Here's why jojoba suits nearly every skin type, and why it's the base of our Self Love Oil ritual.

What is jojoba oil?

Jojoba oil comes from the seeds of the jojoba shrub, a tough desert plant native to the American Southwest and northern Mexico. Native peoples of the Sonoran Desert used it on skin and hair long before it reached a single shelf.

Here's the surprise: jojoba isn't really an oil. It's a liquid wax. That sounds like a small technicality, but it changes everything about how it behaves on skin. Waxes are more stable than oils, so jojoba stays fresh far longer, and its structure is remarkably close to something your body already makes.

Why it works like your skin's own oil

Your skin produces its own conditioning oil, called sebum. It's the thin, natural layer that keeps healthy skin soft and comfortable. Jojoba's structure closely mimics sebum, closer than almost any other plant oil.

That resemblance is jojoba's whole secret. Because your skin recognizes something so much like its own oil, jojoba settles in easily instead of sitting on top. It hydrates without the greasy, coated feeling that heavier oils leave behind. Skin just feels like itself, only softer.

What jojoba oil does for skin

Jojoba oil for your face

Body butters are rich by design, but faces usually want something lighter. Jojoba is one of the few single ingredients comfortable in both roles. Pressed into damp skin after cleansing, two or three drops act as a simple, honest face moisturizer: enough to soften, never enough to shine.

If you're new to facial oils, start at night, use less than you think you need, and patch test on your inner arm for 24 to 48 hours first. Good skincare is patient.

The base of the Self Love Oil ritual

Jojoba is the first ingredient in our Self Love Oil, and everything else is built on top of it. Lavender, rose buds, hibiscus flowers, and warm cinnamon steep in that jojoba base, alongside a rose quartz stone, a small tradition of self-love we keep in every bottle.

The jojoba is what makes the ritual practical. Because it absorbs fast and never feels greasy, you can take a quiet minute with it, morning or night, and get on with your day. Warm a few drops between your palms, press into damp skin, breathe. Our guide on how to use body oil walks through the full ritual, and if the lavender note is what draws you in, read about lavender in skincare too.

How to get the most from jojoba oil

  1. Apply to damp skin. Right after a shower or after cleansing your face, while skin still holds water, is jojoba's best moment.
  2. Use drops, not pours. Two or three drops for the face, five or six for arms or legs. Warm them between your palms first.
  3. Press, don't rub. Pressing the oil into skin helps it settle in evenly and turns application into a calmer moment.
  4. Patch test first. Try a small amount on your inner arm for 24 to 48 hours before full use, especially if your skin is sensitive.

Questions people ask

What is jojoba oil, exactly?

Jojoba oil is pressed from the seeds of the jojoba shrub, a desert plant from the American Southwest. Technically it isn't an oil at all but a liquid wax, and its structure closely resembles the sebum your own skin makes. That's why skin drinks it in so easily.

Is jojoba oil good for oily skin?

Jojoba is one of the few oils that oily skin tends to welcome. Because it feels so much like skin's own sebum, it moisturizes without leaving the heavy, greasy film that richer oils can. Many people with oily or combination skin find it balances beautifully.

Can I use jojoba oil on my face?

Yes. Jojoba is light, fast-absorbing, and gentle enough that many people use it as a daily face moisturizer. A few drops pressed into damp skin is plenty. As with any new skincare product, patch test on your inner arm for 24 to 48 hours first.

Does jojoba oil feel greasy?

No, and that's its signature. Jojoba absorbs quickly and settles into a soft, satin finish rather than a shiny film. It's why our Self Love Oil feels like it disappears into skin, leaving softness instead of slick.
