A grass, not a fruit

Here's the surprise most people never learn: lemongrass has nothing to do with lemon trees. It's a tall, reedy grass that grows in dense clumps across the tropics, with long blades that look more like an ornamental garden plant than anything you'd expect to smell.

Crush a stalk, though, and the air fills with bright, unmistakable lemon. The reason is a natural aroma compound called citral. Lemon peel has it. Lemongrass has far more of it. So this humble grass ends up smelling more intensely lemony than the fruit that named it, with none of the fruit's sour juice. It's lemon's scent, borrowed by a plant that never grew one.

From soup pots to skincare

Long before lemongrass reached a single jar of body butter, it was food. Cooks across Southeast Asia have bruised and simmered the stalks for generations: in Thai soups, Vietnamese marinades, teas poured on hot afternoons. How the oil is made

Lemongrass essential oil comes from steam distillation, one of the oldest and simplest ways to capture a scent. The stalks are chopped and steamed. The steam draws the aromatic oil out of the plant and carries it upward, and when the steam cools back into water, the oil separates and is collected. No solvents, no additives. The bottle holds nothing but the concentrated character of the grass itself.

What that character smells like: lemony first, then green. There's a fresh-cut-grass quality underneath the citrus that plain lemon oil doesn't have, which keeps lemongrass from ever reading as harsh or artificial. It smells like a garden in the sun, sharp enough to wake you, soft enough to wear.
