How to use bar soap: get the most from every bar.

Handmade soap behaves a little differently than what you're used to. Here's how to lather it, use it, and make one bar last.

What makes handmade soap different

Most store-bought body wash is built the same way as lotion: mostly water, held together with detergents, preservatives, and fragrance. Our Oatmeal Soap is a true bar, made from colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. No water, no sulfates, no long ingredient list. It cleanses the same way soap has for centuries, just with gentler, richer ingredients than most bars on a drugstore shelf.

How to lather it right

Wet the bar, then rub it between your hands (or work it into a washcloth) until a soft lather builds. Bring the lather to your skin rather than scrubbing the bar directly against yourself. It's a small habit, but it spreads the soap further, feels gentler, and helps the bar last longer.

Face or body?

Both. Colloidal oatmeal is famously gentle, gentle enough that it's a classic choice for sensitive and easily-irritated skin, on the face as much as the body. For your face, keep the lather light and rinse with lukewarm water. As with any new skincare product, patch test on your inner arm for 24 to 48 hours first if you're trying it for the first time.

Making one bar last

The biggest thing that shortens a bar's life isn't use, it's water. A bar left sitting in a puddle softens and dissolves fast. Keep it on a dish that drains, or simply prop it up on its edge between uses so air can reach it. Dry soap is soap that lasts.

Questions people ask

Is bar soap less hygienic than liquid body wash?

Not if you store it right. The old worry is that bacteria can sit on a wet bar, but a bar that's allowed to dry between uses stays clean the same way a dry cutting board does. Keep it on a draining dish, not flat in a puddle, and there's nothing to worry about.

Can I use oatmeal soap on my face?

Yes. Colloidal oatmeal is one of the gentlest cleansers there is, which is why it's a classic choice for sensitive skin. Work up a lather in your hands first rather than rubbing the bar directly on your face, and rinse with lukewarm, not hot, water.

Why does my soap get soft and mushy?

Standing water is the culprit. A bar left sitting in a puddle at the bottom of a shower dish soaks up water and softens fast, which shortens its life. A dish with drainage, or simply propping the bar up between uses, lets it dry out and last far longer.

How long does one bar last?

It depends on how often it's used and how it's stored, but a bar that's kept dry between uses typically lasts several weeks of regular use. A bar left sitting in water can go soft and disappear in half that time.
